How to Transfer Ancestry DNA Results to FamilyTreeDNA

Step 1: Download your DNA data from Ancestry.com

  1. Log into your Ancestry.com account.
  2. Navigate to the "DNA" tab and select your test.
  3. Find the "DNA Settings" button (if screen is narrow, may need to click on "..." button to get to "DNA Settings").
  4. Scroll down to "Download or delete" and click on "Download DNA data". Follow the prompts.
  5. Check your email for a confirmation link to download your data.
  6. The downloaded file will be a .zip file containing your raw DNA data.

Step 2: Create a new account on FamilyTreeDNA and upload your DNA data

  1. Go to the FamilyTreeDNA website.(https://www.familytreedna.com/)
  2. Hover over "Upload DNA Data" then click on the "Autosomal DNA" option
  3. Fill out the required information to create a new account
  4. Follow the prompts, selecting Ancestry.com as the source of your data
  5. Upload the raw DNA data file you downloaded from Ancestry.com
  6. Follow the instructions to finalize the upload process, which may include accepting terms and conditions
  7. You will receive email notification that your account has been created. Be sure to record your kit number and password as you will need these to log in once your DNA has been processed
  8. It will take several days for FamilyTreeDNA to complete its processing. Once you get an email letting you know the process is done, log on to FamilyTreeDNA. On your "Home" page, if there is a "Badge" indicating your Y-DNA Haplogroup, which should be R-M269, you have been lucky enough to get you Y-DNA information.
  9. You can explore their tools if you wish, and see if you have any interesting DNA matches
